It looks like SonarLint must be used with an IDE. Some of our projects use a vendor IDE, either based on Eclipse or looking a lot like it, but many are not. Is it not possible to use SonarLint without an IDE?

If your vendor IDEs are based on a recent version of Eclipse, you could certainly try SonarLint for Eclipse with them.
But in general, “SonarLint without an IDE” is either SonarQube or SonarCloud.
