Hi just jumping straight in. I had installed 8.3. on Linux. How straightforward is it to upgrade to 8.4 release or is it recommended to do a fresh 8.4 install.

it depends … in theory the upgrade should be smooth
But there are 3 possible problems with db migration - one of them MSSQL related.

i recommend to wait for Sonarqube 8.4.1 which is expected soon

thats very useful to know. I know from past experience upgrding any software like this is not always so smooth. But your advice to wait for a later version makes sense.
In the meantime 8.4.1 is available, the MSSQL related problems with db migration are fixed.
