I am unable to create a new project due to the error “Project key already exists”. I do not have a project with that key in my organization. Are SonarCloud Project keys supposed to be unique worldwide? That would be very unfortunate as it limits what we would name our apps or would force us to find a globally unique name for our app which would sometimes violate company conventions concerning asset names.
Hey there.
Yes. Project keys are not scoped to the organization.
However, you can have a different Project Name than your Project Key – so feel free to keep your Project Name exactly as you want, even if your Project key, for example, needs to be prefixed with your org key (or whatever else makes it unique).
Okay, understood. That’s quite an interesting design though. There must’ve been technical constraints so hard to manoeuvre through that they warranted globally unique keys
I would love it if we scoped project keys to the org. For a number of historical reasons (SonarQube Cloud grew out of a very large SonarQube instance many years ago), that would be quite an effort. Maybe someday!
Understood. Thanks
