Unexpected user removal from Sonar Organization

Hello everyone,

On 31st July 2025 we encountered an issue where a user was unexpectedly removed from our organization.
This particular user had been intentionally removed some time before 7th March 2025 and then added back on 7 March 2025.
But after adding them back, no admins intentionally removed the user again and the user claims not to have deliberately left the organization.

One strange fact is:

  • the background tasks associated with this user before 7 March now display Anonymous as the associared user
  • the background tasks associated to this user recently, still display the user ID despite the user does not appear in the Organization’s list of members.

Has anyone experienced similar behavior with Sonar User Management? We’d appreciate any insights or suggestions on how to further investigate or resolve this.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I’ve flagged this for the team.

Hello @ftlvz,

This is strange. When I checked the DB, I can see that the user is part of the organization. Is it the case that, the user was added back?

Also, I checked the logs for removal of this user from the organization for the past month and I couldn’t find any entry for it.

Thanks,
Sarath

Hi @Sarath_Nair,

I agree this is strange. I’ve just checked and the user does NOT appear in the Members list of the Organization, nor they’re included in the Group they should be associated with.

But, the user’s ID appears in the background tasks lists of projects as if the user is indeed a member of the Organization, instead of displaying “Anonymous“.

So maybe the user IS part of the Org. but it is displayed?

What should I do?

Thanks,
Francesco

I will reach out to you in private to get more info

@ftlvz,

Thank you for sending me the user details. I can see from the logs that the user has left the organization from the SonarQube Cloud page. We also show a confirmation if the user really wants to leave the organization. This happened on 30/Jul/2025:15:21:28 UTC

Thanks,
Sarath

@Sarath_Nair thank you for looking into this. I’m glad this was not caused by a system issue.

May I ask you why I see the user’s ID under their background Tasks instead of the label “Anonymous“?

Thank you!

@ftlvz can you send me the logs in private message please for me to have a look?
