When I try to commit anything in
git, the SonarQube for IDE plugin starts to analyze. After a while, the commit window only shows “Checks failed”, so it did not commit anything. According to the plugin’s log, it tried to analyze the configuration file .idea/sonarlint.xml in this project.

If you uninstall SonarQube for IDE, does the commit work as normal?

Yes, after unistalling the plugin everything works as normal.

I reinstalled it later for testing purposes, but the pre-commit analysis failed again with the same error.

Could you share a bit more details about the problem?

  • What is the changeset you are trying to commit? Is .idea/sonarlint.xml part of it?
  • Could you share with us a picture of this “Checks failed” error that you mentioned?
  • Do you have any exclusions configured?

Hello, I have this problem when I add a .idea config file, the check for that commit is freeze until canceled manually. If a remove the problematic file from the commit, check runs normal. P.S. when check on commits run after commit??? ;(

You’re absolutely right—I was able to reproduce the issue by following the steps you described.

I’ve created a ticket on our side, and we plan to address it in the upcoming release on August 19th.

In the meantime, if this is a blocking issue, you can disable the pre-commit analysis and manually trigger the analysis on the specific files you need.

You’ll find this setting by clicking the gear icon next to the Commit and Push button, and uncheck Perform SonarQube for IDE analysis.

Hi Damien,

I reainstalled the plugin to test again. Currently it is version 10.29.0.81960 for IntelliJ IDEA 2025.2.

Updating to the most recent version did not help, the error still persists.

After clicking the commit button, the “Waiting for SonarQube for IDE Analysis” window shows up and it staysy there for about one minute (which is rather long compared to the time, whe it was working properly).

After that the “Checks failed“ message appears right below my commit message

Re-running the checks or trying to commit again leads to the same result.

As you can see, the .idea/sonarline.xml file is not a part of the changeset.

I did not configure any file exclusions.

Hey @TunaIII, the fix I mentioned earlier is not yet released. However, I’m not sure if this issue is related to your case - the pom.xml file should normally be analyzed.

Could you please share the verbose logs?

Additionally, it would be helpful if you could briefly describe your project structure (e.g., mono-repo, multiple modules, presence of a .gitignore file, etc.).

Hi Nicolas,

the project is just a simple maven project - there is only one module. Our GitLab installation only uses one repository for every project. There is a .gitignore file, it only contains some of the configuration files created by the IDE.

The problem persists in multiple projects. Sometimes (like 5-10 tries) later it works, without changing anything in the commit, so it is not always easy to reproduce.

We’ve just released SonarQube for IntelliJ version 10.30. Could you please update to the latest version and check if the issue still occurs? This release should resolve your problem, @kingg22.

As for your concern, @TunaIII, I’m not convinced that updating will help. I’m continuing to investigate and will get back to you with an update, the information you provided in your last message is quite useful. Thank you for your patience.

Do you still experience this issue @TunaIII? With the current information available, I could not find the reason. If you still have the issue, please provide the full verbose logs of SonarQube for IDE, from the very start. I will then proceed to create a new thread so that we can fully focus on troubleshooting this.

Thanks, Nicolas, I’ll do it when I experience the problem again.

In the meantime, I managed to find a workaround. Deleting the sonarlint.xml file in the .idea folder and rebinding it through ideas settings helps. The file gets recreated and the analysis works as intended. Interestingly, the recreated file is not different from the original on, as git does not show any difference.

I appear to be seeing a very similar issue. Using version 10.30.0.82084 I instantly get the same “Checks failed” error when pressing Commit or Commit and Push in IntelliJ. In the verbose logs I just see the following line appear: “Pre-commit analysis cancelled because analysis did not start”.

No actual commit is created. It might be relevant that I am just deleting two Java files in the commit, so it makes sense that there are no actual changes to be analysed.

This is actually quite clear now. I created this ticket to address the problem - thanks a lot for the report and the logs. The fix will be included in our next release.

More broadly, this got me thinking about the user experience we provide. Since introducing this feature in IntelliJ almost 10 years ago, we’ve been forcing commits to be cancelled whenever an error occurs on our side. That doesn’t feel right, as users shouldn’t be blocked by something outside of their control. I’ll take some time to rethink this and may add an option to allow commits to proceed even in case of failure - similar to how we handle pre-commit checks when issues are found.

It still happens from time to time, (just once since teh update), but now it does not prevent me from comitting any more. Thank you.
