Errors when running sonarqube-gradle-plugin:3.3 with Java 11

In my Android application project I am using the sonarqube-gradle-plugin:3.3 with OpenJDK 11. When I run ./gradlew sonarqube the following is output to the console. It hasn’t been there ever since. It might be new since I use Java 11.

It looks like basic Java types cannot be resolved during the analysis.
To help you with this issue, we would need more details to understand the issue.

  1. Is the code built with the same JDK?
  2. What happens if you build and analyze with another JDK?

I am using the Android Gradle Plugin in the Android project. As of version 7.0.0 (which I am using) Java 11 is required to build the project. See: Notas da versão do Plug-in do Android para Gradle
Therefore, I cannot use Java 8 to build the project anymore. This worked as along as I used older versions of the plugin. SonarQube however required Java 11 for a while already.

The AbortCompilation error are also output when I use org.sonarsource.scanner.gradle:sonarqube-gradle-plugin:3.2.0.

@Michael, @Quentin I saw you were involved in resolving Java analyzer compile error after upgrading to OpenJDK11. Can you help here, too?

@tobiaspreuss It looks like you have found a relevant thread. Setting the sonar.java.jdkHome to point to the right JDK, you should be able to point to version 8 of the JDK while building with Java 11.

Do you have a suggestion on how to configure property "sonar.java.jdkHome", "/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64" in a machine independent way? The absolute path on my machine might very likely be different on another developer’s machine.

Sorry @tobiaspreuss, I don’t have a simple solution to automatically locate the JDK you want to analyze with. But feel free to suggest tips if you find some.

For the remaining error, this looks like an error in one of the checks that we should be able to fix in the future. A ticket has been created to handle that.

@tobiaspreuss Did you figure out a way to get rid of these Status Error without setting sonar.java.jdkHome? I’m in a similar situation (using sonarqube 3.3 and gradle 7.4 and java 11). And I get these status error: could not retrieve declared method. The analysis is still working and would pass. But I really want to figure out as where are these errors coming from and how to get rid of them

No, I haven’t. I am still seeing these errors. I would be nice if sonar.java.jdkHome could be read from a typical environment variable (Linux, Windows, MacOS) so I can check the setting into version control.

This is particularly the case when your project is running on a remote CI pipeline, like with a GitLab integration in my case. Would really appreciate some developer support on this.

to get rid of the error. Still I do not want to check in a machine-specific path into version control.

Yes exactly, that’s why I mentioned that I’m running on a remote CI, where I cannot install a jdk8 on every run :slight_smile: I fully agree with you, and I wish the developers can fix this internally

One option for you might be to pick an image which has JDK8 preinstalled. Alternatively, it might be possible to configure the JDK paths to be cached. But here we are leaving the scope of this topic. You might want to clarify this on stackoverflow.com.
